After spending more than a decade in the United States pursuing his university studies, our founder, Marcel Owino, returned to his home country of Kenya to work for an international development organization. On weekends, he would organize short day trips and invite colleagues to join. Marcel became the one his colleagues would turn to for advice on booking affordable safaris for visiting family and friends. This advisory role evolved from helping a few dozen colleagues to assisting several hundred interns and young consultants.
While at a popular Nairobi bar for happy hour with friends and colleagues, the topic of safari in Kenya came up. Marcel’s colleagues lamented the high cost of safaris, the dearth of variety of activities, and the generally poor cost-to-value ratios for safaris. After several hours of brainstorming, the idea for Camili Safaris was born.
